It really is amazing how quickly a year has flown by, and how much has happened within those twelve months. Somehow, I’ve found myself smack in the middle of August again, hiding from the heat and counting the days until autumn’s arrival (my favorite time of year!). My birthday is a signal that we’ve almost made it through this stickiest of months. To celebrate: my second style post as a last hurrah to summer before it’s all about boots, sweaters, scarves, and gloves for a very. long. time.

The most important part of this style post — the bracelet. My best friend Lindsey gave it to me when I left Portland, and I wear it all the time to remind myself that great friends really do exist. On the inside of the bracelet are the words “This is the year to…” I’m starting this year off with so many gifts — fantastic friends, a wonderful family, and the most loving, supportive man. So to finish off that ellipsis, this is the year to enjoy all that I have, to be grateful for it every single day, and to keep on building a life that I can be proud of.

The second most important part of this post: the cupcake. The bakery it’s from actually calls it a muffin, but let’s face it — cake + whipped cream + strawberries = strawberry short cupcake. I’m always looking for an excuse to have one, so if you’re ever in my neck of the woods I’ll gladly take you to the Gingerbread Construction Company, which is where all the cupcakes-disguised-as-muffins live.

Sweet & Toasty

As regularly as possible, my wonderful friend, the writer and editor Kim Winternheimer, and I get together for “inspiration meetings” — which really translates to breakfast and chatting about everything under the sun. Since we both work at home, we believe these meetings are crucial to our creative endeavors. (Kim will soon be releasing her literary journal The Masters Review.) But mostly, they’re crucial to our happiness.

Few things are cozier than oatmeal brulée and tea at Lovejoy Bakers on a drizzly February morning. If you don’t live in Portland, or if you live in Portland but haven’t been to LB, you must visit because everything there is absolutely mouth watering. Who knew oatmeal could be so creamy and crave-worthy? Anyway, anyone who knows me knows that I adore coziness, which is why I live in my favorite sweater dress and spend my days under a fuzzy blanket. I’ve got my eye on these faux fur ones, although I fear that if I got one in chocolate brown I’d never be able to find my kitten…

As you can see, she got the love of coziness from me. (Yes, she’s wearing socks.)
