Labor Love

Womens Work Essentials Fall 2013

Happy day after Labor Day! In celebration of whatever you labor over and the coming season, I thought it would be fun to put together a few work wear essentials for fall.

Even though I work at home, sometimes I head out to meet with clients or colleagues, and when I do, I always bring a few essentials along. Aside from these swoon-worthy pieces, I make sure to keep my laptop charger, a USB connector for my phone (much easier than carrying yet another charger), and an old fashioned notebook handy. No matter how tied I am to my technology, I always seem to find myself in need of something to scribble on.

What do you do for work? I’m always eager to learn about how people discovered their callings.

Summer to Fall Fashion Transition Pieces

Summer to Fall Fashion Transition

When I started getting magazines and catalogs announcing fall fashion at the beginning of the month, I hid them away because it felt like it had just gotten warm here. In truth, I’m not eager for summer to be over but since August is rolling around and we’ve begun to make plans for fall, I’m actually enjoying the window shopping stage of summer to fall transition fashion.

Or maybe window shopping won’t suffice, since Nordstrom is having their amazing anniversary sale and I’ve found all these transition pieces that are calling my name. Oh, lovely leather jacket. Oh suede booties! I swear to you, this isn’t a sponsored post — I just found all of these treasures and had to share them with you/ drool over them with you.

Have you fallen in love with anything a la the anniversary sale yet? Are you making any plans for fall?

Weekend Links: My Oh My

{ a la }

Happy weekend, friends! I spent the week playing catch up from my time away in Vermont, which actually felt really good. Kind of like working out after taking a too-long break. (Does that sound like I’m trying to talk myself into something? I am.) We’re feeling really lucky to have had so many weeks of color in the trees out here, so I’m hoping we’ll get to spend a lot of time driving and gawking this weekend. What are you up to? Before you head out the door, here are a few great things that I’m dying to share with you:

This past week, I wrote about turning my dread to excitement when it comes to winter, and decor was on that list. I’ve been hunting for a big round mirror to hang above the couch but their price tags are, well, painful. But this DIY Ikea hack is going to satisfy my round mirror cravings without leaving my piggy bank empty. (Check out Melanie Blodgett’s roundup of fantastic Ikea hacks here.)

Way back in 2006, I went to a Jason Mraz concert and became acquainted with the music of Tristan Prettyman. Her acoustic stuff is the best, and she’s recently released a new album. Get a taste of her music with this live, one-take video of her new song, “My Oh My“.

I like soft things. I mean, I really, really love them. If you do too, you’ll love this.

One of my favorite restaurants makes a great panna cotta. Sadly, I’m usually so full of pasta by the end of the meal that I don’t have enough room. So I was pretty excited to find this simple recipe.

This is a definite necessity for the new addition to my menagerie.

See you on Monday for a brand new gift guide!

Gift Guide: Literary Lovers

I’ve been a self-confessed bookworm since I was a little girl. My parents had a wide armchair with a flat base that sat against a corner of the living room, which made a triangle against the wall — the perfect little cranny for me to hide happily with a book all afternoon. It’s always a delight to find other people who love to indulge in great stories as much as I do. For these friends, I’ve found a few book-related treats.

Of course, actual books are probably welcome by bookworms, too. What’s your favorite?

The Gift Guide will be an ongoing feature every other Monday through the season.

Bright Lights on Kirsten Nieman of Restored Style

Kirsten Nieman runs the impeccable decor blog Restored Style, where she collects her favorite things, documents her adventures in creating a home, and offers design services. When you visit Restored Style, you’ll see that Kirsten has a talent for mixing classic style with pieces that hint at the industrial, all while incorporating accessories with a sense of whimsy. The resulting spaces are warm and inviting — places I’d love to call my own. In fact, Kirsten is so good that she’s even welcomed the folks of Young House Love into her home on a recent visit to the City of Roses.

Kirsten and her husband restored a gorgeous bungalow in Portland, and they’re currently on the hunt for a new home in a different neighborhood. I’m literally at the edge of my seat, waiting to find out where they’ll land next!

What do you do for a living? I’m a PR/Marketing gal at a local Portland agency during the day, and a blogger at www.restoredstyle.com by night.

Places you’ve lived: I’ve lived in Portland, Ore. my whole life (except for the four years I spent in Eugene for college) and I plan on staying here forever. I absolutely adore this city!

The place you’d most like to visit: Europe. I really can’t believe I have yet to travel across the pond. Some day…soon!

Your favorite indulgence: Sitting down with a good book, a delicious latte, and silence.

The best advice you’ve ever received: I feel lucky that I’ve been around some amazing women over the years, and each of them have shared some really great advice with me. Here are a few of my favorites!

  • Be brief, but be brilliant.
  • Behind every successful woman is herself.
  • Do what makes you happy. If you are truly passionate about your career, good things will happen!

Thank you, Kirsten! Be sure to check out more of Kirsten’s great style picks at Restored Style. But beware, you may drool on your keyboard while checking out her beautiful bungalow!
