Labor Love

Womens Work Essentials Fall 2013

Happy day after Labor Day! In celebration of whatever you labor over and the coming season, I thought it would be fun to put together a few work wear essentials for fall.

Even though I work at home, sometimes I head out to meet with clients or colleagues, and when I do, I always bring a few essentials along. Aside from these swoon-worthy pieces, I make sure to keep my laptop charger, a USB connector for my phone (much easier than carrying yet another charger), and an old fashioned notebook handy. No matter how tied I am to my technology, I always seem to find myself in need of something to scribble on.

What do you do for work? I’m always eager to learn about how people discovered their callings.

Dress Up, Dress Down Summer Dresses

I can’t tell you how happy I am that the weather has finally warmed up and I don’t have to look at my jeans again for a good, long while. My closet is pretty well stocked with frocks for the summertime, but I know that I could quickly get tired of them if I keep wearing them the same way.

That’s why I love having a few styling options in mind to fancy up or make casual my dress-filled wardrobe this summer. So when Marigold invited me to participate in the Summer of No Pants series, it was a perfect opportunity to sit down and really think about what I have on hand to keep my current favorite dress fresh!

Summer Wardrobe Overhaul

Frock Files | Summer Dresses to Keep Cool

Clockwise: J.Crew / Piperlime / Bloomingdales / ASOS / Forever21

Usually when we pull our seasonal clothes out of storage I get really excited about all the things I’d forgotten about but still love. This time, that wasn’t the case. I’ve been wearing those same dresses for a few years now and my style has shifted since buying them. So even though I feel a little guilty about buying more than one article of clothing at a time, I’ve decided it’s time to invest in a new summer wardrobe.

The criteria: dresses that I can wear every day and for special occasions. It just so happened that most of the dresses I’ve chosen so far are in the blue/green family. Could I be dreaming of my island home? I may be a teensy bit homesick.

Are you breaking out the frocks and flip flops yet? Adding new pieces to your wardrobe?

It’s Pajama Weekend!

Friends, we’ve made it! And by “it” I don’t just mean the holidays. Yep, the universe is still in-tact.

This, the weekend before Christmas, is meant to be spent lounging around, wrapping those last gifts, eating pancakes, and drinking hot chocolate (as a delivery system for marshmallows, right?). In honor of this cozy period, I’ve chosen some of my favorite pajama pieces. Okay, so most days I can’t tear myself away to change out of my pajamas til noon anyway. Doesn’t that just mean they’re worth investing in?

I hope your weekend is merry and full of mirth. Are any of you braving the malls? I’m sending you lots of luck for great parking spaces.

Bright Lights on Theresa of inspirationCOOP

Theresa is the voice behind the impeccable and beautifully written blog inspirationCOOPERATIVE, one of my favorite daily reads. It turns out that Theresa and I have lots in common, including graduate degrees from Emerson College, ties to Hawaii, and a love of travel, and now I’m in love with her Bright Lights picks too.

What do you for a living? I am a full time Domestic Engineer and author of inspirationCOOPERATIVE (do you like how I made that sound all fancy?)

Places you’ve lived? Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Tampa, and New York. I was a bit of a gypsy in my twenties. I would still love to live abroad at some point.

The place you’d most like to visit? Tokyo. My mom is from Japan and it would be great to explore my roots.

Your favorite indulgence? High thread count sheets, reading all day, flowers, and blogging. (Oops, that’s four!)

The best advice you’ve ever received? There are two: “Do what you love and the rest will follow” and “When all else fails, give love.”

Bright Lights: inspirationCOOPERATIVE

Aveda – Just walking into an Aveda store instantly calms me (try it and see for yourself). I’ve been using Aveda’s Shampure shampoo and conditioner for years; It’s like a mini spa treatment every time I wash my hair.

Laura Mercier Primer – I don’t wear much makeup. The little that I do wear includes this primer, which magically evens out skin tone.

J.Crew – One of each, please. I’ve been an avid (or rabid?) fan since 1990!

Heath Ceramics – Any product that is lovingly and painstakingly made by hand speaks to me, and this line of tableware is no exception.

Moleskine – I’m an obsessive note taker and sketcher of ideas, and Moleskine is my favorite type of notebook/journal. I also like the inexpensive, old school composition books.

Apple – Especially my iPhone and MacBook. Where would I be without these products? I suppose I would be reading more books! Which brings me to my next favorite…

Books – Fiction, non-fiction, sweeping love story, mystery, thriller, autobiography, memoir, self-help … I love it all.

Vanity Fair – I have a small love affair with magazines that dates back to my teens (hello, Sassy!). The one I currently love most of all is Vanity Fair. From Graydon Carter’s opening letter to the Proust Questionnaire, each issue is brimming with goodness.
