A Life Update + Weekend Links

You may have noticed that things have slowed down a little around here. There are lots of reasons for that. For one thing, Kona has been sick on and off for the past two months and we’ve been trying to diagnose the problem. It’s been stressful because we end up having to stay home with her, which begins to sound a little crazy when you’re calling in to work from home again. “My dog is sick, I can’t come in,” begins to feel like the adult equivalent of “My dog ate my homework.”

We’re waiting for test results, but we’ve also had to make some big changes that none of us enjoy. Since Kona is one of those puppies who wants to eat everything off the ground (worms! mulch! grass! bugs!) and since we’re not sure if that’s what’s causing problems, our vet suggested muzzling her when we’re outside. She makes a little huffy sound when we put it on her, and she looks like a tiny, fluffy Hannibal. And even though we love our doggie daycare, with their 1:10 person to dog ratio, we aren’t sure if she’s getting sick from something (or someone) there either — so we’re in the midst of finding a dog walker who can come check in on Kona when I’m in the office.

The other things keeping us busy are much more cheerful, though! Commencement is coming up at the university I work at, and our guest speaker is none other than Bill Nye, so we’ve been having fun preparing for that. Bow ties everywhere! Only within the past several years has the school emerged as a big player in the college scene, so it’s been a ton of fun to see how proud the students are — of themselves and of all the cool things happening on campus. And maybe I’m a little biased, but Bill Nye is definitely the coolest commencement speaker.

We’re also making big plans for the summer, including a mini getaway in a couple of weeks and a visit from my parents! I can’t wait for my parents to come and visit. We like all the same things, and I’m excited to show them what life up here on the North Shore is like (quite different from their North Shore). And, fingers crossed, we’ll have plenty of picnics and visits with friends and trips to the beach.

And I’m working on a couple of big projects that I can’t wait to tell you about. But for the moment, I’ll hold off so as not to jinx anything. In the meantime, here are five of my favorite things this week:

James has taken over Tuesday night dinners, and this week’s was a big, huge winner!

The fastest way to get everything you want (hint: you already have it).

And to reinforce the idea of abundance, watch the glee this man has over having two things most of us enjoy: a job and a home.

If you, like me, never have gift wrap at the moment you need it.

The best thing is when someone recognizes all the things you hope you’re doing. Thank you, Sheri!

What are you up to this weekend? If you’re celebrating Mothers’ Day, as we are, have the best time!

I’m So Done With Winter + Weekend Links

Frock Files // Weekend Links To Cheer You Up

Earlier this year, I wrote about how I’ve managed to stave off seasonal depression with exercise and the necessary evil/blessing of dog walking even in bad weather (which delivers all that Vitamin D). But after being hit by one snow storm after another, things came to a head this week. On Wednesday morning, halfway through a particularly harrowing drive to work, I pulled over, called James, and burst into tears.

Despite living in Massachusetts for a cumulative six years, I still haven’t quite figured out how to deal with the six months of coat wearing, the slippery sidewalks, and the sheer terror I feel every time I lose some control of my car because of ice. Which is what kept happening to me on my way to work, and then because of a surprise afternoon storm, on my way home. If I can be really, totally, brutally honest for just one second, I’d like to say this: I love living in Massachusetts from April through November. I don’t really even mind it in December. And there’s hope, at least, in March. But January and February? No redeeming qualities. None. Okay, one: sometimes it’s sunny.

But since we don’t have any plans to escape the winter physically (and, hey, maybe it’ll be over soon…?), I’m turning to the kind of escape that doesn’t require a plane ticket: entertainment. If you, too, are in need of a vacation from this winter, perhaps you’ll want to get absorbed in another world as well, even if just for a few seconds.

What happens when everything is just right Except For That One Thing.

The new wave of Americans in Paris?

Completely obsessed with Orphan Black.

Food and charming stories by an author named Banana? In Japan? Perfect.

Louis CK on trying to impress his daughters, screwing up, and impressing them anyway. Adorable. (This whole series is awesome.)

P.S. I promise I’ll be in a better mood next week. It will have a lot to do with the floral DIY I’ve been putting together for you!

Frock Files on Common Air Radio!

Frock Files on Common Air Radio Programme

Even though it’s Christmas week, we’re still saying TGIF around here! James had to go to work the past couple of days and I’m busily preparing for a few exciting things that are coming up in January, so now we’re looking forward to a couple of days of recuperative fun.

Before we head out, I wanted to leave you with this link to a radio interview I did with a Canadian program called Common Air. The show explores topics of art and culture, and delves into questions like how artists survive in this economy. I talk about why I started Frock Files, how I work with sponsors, and where I spend my time as a reader in the blogosphere. It’s really such an honor to be interviewed by Kim Hornak.

Thank you so much for spending time here at Frock Files this year. Our audience has grown by fifteen fold, which has given me so many opportunities to create better content each week. I can’t wait to see what 2014 brings! I’ll be taking the next few days off, but I’ll be back on New Year’s Eve with a brand new post for the fresh new year!

The cute radio is the Pure Evo Mio, and boy, do I want one.

Just a few days left until Christmas! Maybe it’s because Thanksgiving was so late this year, but James and I have noticed a disappointing lack of Christmas decorations this year.

To make up for it and to get into the holiday spirit, we’re going to bake some cookies and watch lots of Christmas movies this weekend! What are you up to this weekend? Here are five great things I found to help you kick off your weekend:

This family deserves extra credit for their Christmas greeting!

A new friend recently told me about this story of social media gone wrong – and very right.

Since Sarah surprised me with a Corgi-shaped cookie cutter, these are definitely happening.

Donuts, donuts, everywhere!

Love eggnog? Can’t do dairy (or eggs)? Vegan “egg” nog.

The word “nog” reminds me of the word “snog,” which I hope you’re doing a lot this weekend! We bought a sprig of mistletoe last week so that we can do even more than usual. Kissy kissy, friends!

Weekend Links + Coming Together

We dove right back in when we returned from our trip, and this week has been chock full of exciting new possibilities, projects galore, and yes, even surgery (she’s spayed!) for poor little Kona. She’s truly disgruntled about the horrific cone she has to wear for the next two days.

And all three of us are re-adjusting to life as we know it. Does anyone else have a hard time getting back into a routine after a long vacation? I was in a good rhythm before we left and I’m finding it difficult to get into the groove again.

I’ve been collecting links, and here are the five most awesome things I found to share with you:

This video echoes my own thoughts. Especially the one about working hard.

What happens when a homeless man and a computer programmer come together.

Five minutes is about all the time I can take to make lunch. This soup is my new obsession!

The secret to making difficult tasks easy.

The prettiest walnut butter cookies you ever did see. Oh, and they’re GF and dairy free – bonus!

What are you up to this weekend? Last minute shopping? Tree decorating? Sleeping in? Whatever you’ve got on your plate, may it be merry, bright, and delicious.
