Cubicle Makeover with Wayfair

How to Make Over a Cubicle | Frock Files

When Wayfair approached me about putting together a post for their blog, I was just settling into my job at the university and I was so excited about having a cubicle of my own. Yep, while everyone is always complaining about the dreadful cubicle (my English friends can’t believe we still have them at all. “That’s so…90s!”), I loved the idea of having a space dedicated to my work, outside of my home. Ahh, the freelancer’s brain.

That said, my cubicle is in a basement, with no window, and everything about it is pale grey. I knew that I wanted to spruce things up, and the kind folks at Wayfair were in helping me to infuse the space with personality and light.

Lamps Plus Giveaway in Radiant Orchid

Pantone Radiant Orchid Lamps Plus Giveaway | Frock Files

Every year, I get a kick out of Pantone’s announcement about their color of the year, and this year I’m especially excited about their selection: Radiant Orchid! To help you kick of 2014 in a Pantone perfect way, I’ve partnered with Lamps Plus to give away one of the Radiant Orchid lamps from their Color Plus Lighting Collection.

On a personal note, I think that our Lamps Plus lamp has actually helped stave off the slump I felt last year during these very short days. We live in new construction with no overhead lights in the bedrooms or living room. We put our Lamps Plus lamp in the corner living room and — voila! — it went from cavernous to cozy. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it has made all the difference in the world for my mood. When it gets dark at 4pm, I actually look forward to turning on the lights and getting cozy with a hot cup of tea.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment about your favorite room in your home (and why!), and follow Lamps Plus on Twitter and Instagram. The winner will be announced this Wednesday, December 18th on my Facebook page, and contacted directly by email. Lamps must be ordered by December 31, 2013. Sorry, the drawing is only open to US residents 18 and over.

Tempur-Pedic Says the #ChoiceisYours

If I don’t get a solid eight hours of sleep, I turn into a grumpy zombie. This used to happen a lot when we had what I like to call “the brick mattress,” which I was convinced was just a box spring with an inch of padding on top. It was the kind of mattress that had me making excuses to sleep on the couch.

Initially, someone (ahem) wasn’t convinced we needed to get a Tempur-Pedic. So we went to try out the different memory foam mattresses – and then we laid on a Tempur-Pedic. Then we laid on all the Tempur-Pedic mattresses. Multiple Times. The salespeople began to hover, nervous that we would never leave the store.

Since the quality of my sleep has vastly improved, I don’t drink nearly as much coffee as I used to. My body doesn’t ache in weird places anymore. I can’t tell when James, an active sleeper, is moving around next to me. So in essence, it’s saved us on the costs of coffee, chiropractor appointments, and probable couples’ counseling. That’s a win-win-win.

Tempur-Pedic is releasing their new TEMPUR-Choice™ mattress, which features multiple adjustable comfort zones. I had the chance to lay on one this past weekend and I began plotting where else we could put another bed because I need one.

While I’m working on finding us a bigger house for our future Tempur-Pedic, you can enter the Tempur-Pedic Pin to Win contest for a chance to win one of your own.

Tempur-Pedic Choice is Yours Pinterest Challenge

Create a board reflecting the ways your and your partner’s design styles differ, then let Tempur-Pedic know about your board by posting a link on their Facebook page. If you win, you’ll score a TEMPUR-Choice™ Supreme Mattress plus a design consultation with Design Sponge’s Grace Bonney. Now I’m double jealous.

Target Hits the Bullseye

Target Bullseye U Collection: Affordable Decor for College Budgets

When I was a kid, back-to-school shopping was one of the highlights of my summer. There’s just so much possibility in a new box of No. 2 pencils and all those pale blue lines of composition books just waiting to be filled. It reminds me of that line from You’ve Got Mail: “If I knew your name and address, I would send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils.” Be still, my beating heart!

It only got better when I went to college because back-to-school shopping included things to add to my living spaces. I lived in four different places in the four years I was working toward my bachelor’s degree, each of them vastly different from the next. I loved starting fresh with a few new things each year, but I always spent vast amounts of time searching for the best deals.

If only Target’s Back to College décor were around back then! You know how Target has this gravity force field that pulls you in, so you go in for vitamins and end up falling in love with something all the way in home décor? That’s exactly what happened to me the other day. The home section is chock full of hip, high-quality, really inexpensive bedding, furniture, and décor at prices that even college students (and their parents) will find easy to swallow.

In fact, a lot of the pieces are things that I’d love to put in my guest room, so I began daydreaming about how they would fit together. I wanted to go for something that I call bohemian-elegant, mixing natural elements with jewel tones. The result: an understated but glam space well within my limited budget.

Want to daydream about your space? Whether you’re putting together a college dorm room or a grown-up bedroom, you can play around with your options with Target’s uStyler tool. Think of it as the digital paper doll of home décor – you can switch out bedding, accessories, and furniture to create your very own masterpiece.

What are you drooling over from the Back to College collection at Target?

A Tiny House Hotel

Caravan Tiny House Hotel Portland

One of last Friday’s links was connected to Airbnb, a cool service that allows travelers to sublet apartments for short or long periods of time. Well, over the weekend I learned about a cool new hotel that books exclusively through Airbnb — and it’s in line with one other thing I’m wild about: tiny houses.

Caravan is the first tiny house hotel in the country, currently featuring three miniature houses built on 100-200 square foot flatbed trailers. The houses are situated around a central community area with a barbecue, a fire pit, and Adirondack chairs, and are easily within walking distance of the awesome shops and restaurants in the Alberta Arts District. They all have bathrooms and tiny kitchens.

While most of us probably wouldn’t fare well with permanent tiny homes, a little tiny home vacation sounds like a lot of fun. A bit like urban glamping, don’t you think?

P.S. A couple who built a tiny home to live and work in — with special space just for their cat.
