Pennies for Love: A Series on Affordable Ideas to Keep Romance Alive

Even though I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, I’m a big romantic at heart. But it’s never the big boxes of chocolates or overly-elaborate proposals that get me — instead, it’s the little things. If you follow me on Instagram, you already know that I came home from NYC last week to a clean house, a happy puppy, and takeout from my favorite Indian restaurant, as well as a single, perfect red leaf on my desk. I loved it more than a bouquet of flowers.

Today, my super-brilliant friend MJ and I are launching a mini-series called Pennies for Love all about romantic and inexpensive ideas to ignite the flame (or just keep it burning) with the one you love. We’re kicking things off with a list of 18 romantic gestures that cost little or nothing, so that you can jumpstart your romantic endeavors right away! A key here: don’t expect recognition for your efforts. Just do it because you want to, out of love!

18 Inexpensive Ways to Be Romantic

1. Bring your partner a cup of coffee in bed.
2. Slip a love note in his/her pocket to find later.
3. Do one of their household duties. (Just this once!)
4. Put on his/her favorite album during breakfast/dinner.
5. Hold hands.
6. Read out loud to each other.
7. Go on a date and get dolled up the way you would in the beginning.
8. When s/he’s having a hard day, let it be okay to not talk. Run a bath, make a cocktail, or give a massage instead.
9. Make out like teenagers.
10. Have a picnic. If it’s too cold out, have a car picnic.
11. Send a link to a funny video or an article that made you think of him/her.
12. Bring a surprise dessert home on a weeknight.
13. Laugh at his/her jokes.
14. Spoon.
15. Celebrate everything! Promotions, new clients, big gigs. Ask, “How shall we celebrate?” Then actually do it.
16. Go back to the place where you fell in love.
17. Smile at your partner first thing in the morning.
18. Listen with your eyes, your hears, and your brain. Be totally present.

In the coming weeks, MJ and I will be sharing date ideas and more inexpensive romantic gestures. We can’t wait to hear you make sparks fly with your love, too!

  1. What a great collabo!! I’m lovin 7, 10 and you know I love #12!! Heart you guys!! xo

  2. I love all of these! It’s often the little things that make the biggest impact. I brought up all the garbage cans last night (we have a big driveway hill) and my husband was happily surprised. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I could see he appreciated it šŸ™‚

    • Absolutely! Some mornings, James pops out of bed to walk the dog even though it’s my turn (we alternate) and I’m SO grateful. It’s all these small moments that add up to lasting happiness.

    Sounds like an interesting blog.

  4. What a fun collaboration! So many delightful things on that list. It really is the thoughtful actions and small gestures that mean the most. šŸ™‚

  5. Wonderful list. We’ve had lots of living room picnics through out the years, and we love them. Little things make a big difference!! Can’t wait to read more!

  6. My faves are #15 & #18. What awesome suggestions! I know I need to do more small gestures. Joseph & I are really good about touching a lot–nothing even necessarily romantic, just a hand on the shoulder, touching hands for a brief moment. We always greet each other with a kiss & a hug. But other things, I need to do better at. Thanks for the reminder, & love the series!

    • Touch is so important! We’re even seeing that with the puppy. Since we’re always cuddling each other, we handle the puppy a lot — and before that, the breeder spent a lot of time cuddling each of the puppies every day. As a result, Kona is a really sweet dog, never defensive or aggressive. Seeing it in her little furry form makes it abundantly apparent that we ALL benefit from snuggles!
