Nothing beats warm, clean sheets. In Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel The Marriage Plot, one of his characters designates Wednesdays as “clean sheet Wednesdays,” which was so appealing to me that I’ve set aside one day a week to enjoy tucking clean sheets into our bed, too.
But each week, without fail, I end up putting the sheets on the wrong way and having to start over — a little frustration, but an unnecessary one none-the-less. The long-term cure seems to be striped sheets, since I always know that the stripes are vertical and should go on the bed that way. But what about all of our non-striped sheets? For these, I’ve created a solution: putting a single safety pin at one of the short edges.
The pin can go into the wash with the sheets and then all I have to do is locate it to know that I’m putting the sheets on the right way. No more haroomphing at the mattress for having to start over. It’s the little things.
